Science Department

“Science is not formal log–it needs the free play of the mind in as great a degree as any other creative art. It is true that this is a gift which can hardly be taught, but its growth can be encouraged in those who already posses it.”
Max Born (1882-1970) German Physicist. Nobel Prize, 1954

Enrichment Activities

Seed Planting Day
As part of their Science CA1 alternative assessment, the students embarked on an experiential learning on Plants. The Primary 3 had a Seed Planting Day where the students gathered in the canteen to plant their seeds into the plastic container. The students took care of their plant and observed their growth. Once the seeds had germinated and grown into saplings, the students transplanted their saplings in the Vegetable Garden.

Vegetable Garden
Students took on the responsibility to nurture their plant by watering and weeding it. Through the journey, the students learnt about the life cycle of plant, what plants need to grow, the different types of leaves and the different parts of the plant. Students created and designed their own Science Scrap book to record their plant learning journey and their reflection. In conclusion, the students had an enriching and meaningful encounter where “Green Minds Think Alike”.

MOE Excel Day – “Green Minds Think Alike”
Ms Diana Lin, together with a group of teachers from the Science Department, presented a Science lesson, Green Minds Think Alike, at the MOE Excel Fest 2006 on the 7 and 8 of July. The audience sat through and participated in the Science lesson which involved games, riddles, online quizzes and learning stations on the topic of Plants. Each learning station provides a different learning experience and objective for the learners. The activities involved in the learning stations seek to integrate Science with other disciplines like English, Mathematics and Art, to make learning more meaningful. The various activities are designed to provide hands-on and minds-on learning in which pupils have to ask open-ended or thinking questions to complete their tasks. As pupils discuss and challenge each other’s conceptualization in the lesson, independent learning and thinking are stimulated.

Primary 4

Community Gardening Project
As part of their CA 2 alternative assessment, the Primary 4 pupils embarked on a level-wide community gardening. This project is a joint effort with the National Parks Board (NParks), Mountbatten Community Centre, and Kong Hwa Very Supportive Parents (VSP). The pupils would plant trees in Mountbatten Community Centre while completing designated activity sheets and taking care of the garden.

National Weather Science Project
The NWSP was officially on 31 March 2005 by the Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The project is organized by Senoko Power Ltd and is supported by MOE and the National Environment Agency (NEA).

10 pupils from P4/6 and 10 from P4/7 have been selected to take part in this national competition. They learnt to take weather (such as temperature and humidity) readings and tried to relate weather to pupils’ absenteeism rate and sales of cold drinks in the school canteen.

Primary 5

Forensic Trailt
The P5 pupils will embark on a Forensic Trail as a post-examination activity. This activity will see them working as detectives to uncover the truth by analyzing the evidence presented. This fun-filled activity aims to get the insatiable inquisitive minds of the pupils thinking!

Primary 6

Botanical Gardens
The primary six students went on a experiential learning trail at Botanical Gardens

Hydroponics
Every year, P6 pupils will undertake Hydroponics as a Life Science enrichment activity. The pupils experience plant production with nutrient solutions instead of soil in the Green House.

Mass Lecture
As part of their PSLE Science revision, the primary 6 would have a mass lecture carried out in the School Hall by various Primary 6 teachers. Past Years’ topics were recapitulated and techniques in answering open-ended questions were be reiterated.

All Levels Enrichment Activities

Science Corner
Our Science Corner aims to provide pupils with more opportunities for interactive activities. Pupils can try their hands on Science fun kits or take a leisure read at Science magazines and books.

In addition, a group of pupils will conduct Science demonstrations every Thursday during their recess. These are scheduled from Week 2 to Week 7 each term.

Addest Workshop for all Students
3 pupil representatives from each class were given first-hand training on the use of some newly purchased Science-IT kit. Data-logging techniques were taught through activities which translate concepts into data. These pupil representatives will then facilitate a series of IT-infused Science laboratory lessons by imparting their knowledge to their fellow classmates.

Young Scientist Card
Primary 3 to Primary 5 Students will have to embark on a Young Scientist Card Activity each year. The students will be awarded badges on completion of the Young scientist Card.

Level Card
Primary 3 Young Zoologist
Primary 4 Young Entomologist
Primary 5 Young Genetist

The objectives of the Young Scientist Card are to encourage students to actively carry out experiments and research and to stimulate interest in children in the area of Science.

Interdisciplinary Experiential Learning
The students embark on inter-disciplinary experiential learning. This year, the Primary 3 went to the Singapore Zoological Gardens, the Primary 4 went to the Esplanade, the Primary 5 went to Suntec City, Esplanade, Marina Square and Raffles City.
